ENERGY STAR APPLIANCES

You are looking at rows of appliances and are having a difficult time deciphering all of the information on the display tags, labels and stickers.  One of these important stickers is the bright blue ENERGY STAR rating label.  It has been around for over 20 years but what does it really mean and can it really save you money?

What is ENERGY STAR?

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) created a voluntary program meant to help individuals and businesses save money while also protecting the environment through energy efficiency.  A third party is used to certify the products based on strict testing in EPA- recognized labs.  Companies can voluntarily submit their appliances to get tested.  If a product passes the energy efficiency standards then it will be given the coveted sticker.

Why should I purchase an ENERGY STAR labeled product?

Purchasing an ENERGY STAR certified appliance is beneficial to you because you can be assured that you are getting a product that will not waste energy and will not add to greenhouse gas emissions or any other pollutants.  Appliances with the ENERGY STAR label must provide the same features and performance levels while still maintaining energy efficiency.

Can ENERGY STAR appliances really save me money?

By purchasing an ENERGY STAR appliance you can guarantee that it will cost less money to run than its conventional counterpart.  If an ENERGY STAR product is more expensive to purchase than a less energy efficient one, then you will make up the price difference in a reasonable amount of time because it will be less costly to run.
